University Hall
University Hall is a national historic landmark designed by the
Boston Architect by Charles Bulfinch (1763-1844).
In front of University Hall is a statue of John Harvard.
Thousands of visitors have their photo taken while
holding the statues left shoe.
Built on the eastern edge of the Old Yard,
where Professor Wigglesworth once watered his cow, University Hall was completed in
1816 ( See old pictures).
It originally housed a dining hall, the University Chapel, and the
offices of the President. The dining hall was moved in 1849, the chapel
was relocated in 1858 to the newly constructed Appleton Chapel, and the
offices of the President moved in 1945 to Massachusetts Hall. University
Hall presently houses the offices of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and
Sciences, the Secretary of the Faculty, the Dean for Undergraduate
Education, the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and
Academic Affairs.
The faculty room was renovated in 2001.
