Centers and Offices

The Dean for Undergraduate Education oversees the following five centers and offices:

Expository Writing

Harvard's expository writing program is the oldest in the United States. Since 1872, when the program was founded, a course in expository writing has been the one academic experience required of every Harvard student. Full description of the courses and more information about the program are available at www.fas.harvard.edu/~expos

The Core Program

"The philosophy of the Core Curriculum rests on the conviction that every Harvard graduate should be broadly educated, as well as trained in a particular academic specialty or concentration. It assumes that students need some guidance in achieving this goal, and that the faculty has an obligation to direct them toward the knowledge, intellectual skills, and habits of thought that are the hallmarks of educated men and women." Information about the Core program is available at icg.fas.harvard.edu/~core.

Freshman Seminar Office

A Freshman Seminar, in which a small group of students works closely with a faculty member on a topic of mutual interest, can provide an unparalleled opportunity for intellectual initiative and active learning. Enrolling in a Freshman Seminar may help you to strike out in new academic directions, or to do advanced work in a subject you already know well; it will certainly help to expand your horizons. You might choose to study the development of the city or the history of zoos; Latin American poetry or Russian theater; Tibetan Buddhism or Irish folklore; elliptic curves or human evolution to cite just a few of our current offerings. Full descriptions of the seminars and more information about the program are available at www.fas.harvard.edu/seminars

Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning

The Derek Bok Center's mission is to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in Harvard College courses. The center provides consultations, programs and information for faculty and staff, offers a variety of programs and online resources to help improve the quality of teaching. Students can find links for class evaluations and resources for effective learning. Visitors from other universities can access materials on the art of teaching including videos and online documents. The website of the Derek Bok Center is at bokcenter.fas.harvard.edu.

Office of International Programs

Spending significant time living in, and learning about, another country or culture should be viewed as an essential part of your education. Some Harvard students take time off to travel or work overseas, others pursue academic course work at foreign institutions, and still others spend their summers studying or completing internships abroad. There are many options that can help you to combine cultural immersion, intellectual challenge, and individual growth. The place to begin exploring the possibilities is the Office of International Programs, where you will find lots of resources to help you to see what is available, and advisers to help you to focus your search. Don't hesitate to start thinking about international experience during your freshman year for study abroad during your sophomore, junior, or senior year. You can find more information at www.fas.harvard.edu/international_programs.
