Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education
THIS IS A HISTORICAL DOCUMENT. LAST UPDATE October 10 2002. Created in 2002 by Oliver Knill
Programs
Members of the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education have
responsibilities for a number of programs affecting faculty and
students, including:
Special Concentrations
Dean Deborah Foster is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for
Special Concentrations, and Stephanie Macaris provides assistance for this program.
From the
Student handbook:
"The option of petitioning for a Special Concentration is for the serious student whose academic
interests cross departmental lines. Special Concentrations offers a student the opportunity
to design his or her own program of concentration with the advice and consent of
the various members of the faculty and administration. With this option the Faculty addressed
special educational objectives not accommodated by existing concentrations. Special Concentrations is
not intended to encourage students either to avoid particular departmental requirements or to create
a broad, unfocused concentration that could be described as 'general studies.'"
Thomas T. Hoopes Prize
The Office for Undergraduate Education oversees the annual selection of winners of the
Thomas T. Hoopes Prizes. These are undergraduate prizes to be given for the purpose of
"promoting, improving and enhancing the quality of education ... in
literary, artistic, musical, scientific, historical or other academic
subjects made part of the College curriculum under Faculty supervision
and instructions, particularly by recognizing, promoting, honoring and
rewarding excellence in the work of undergraduates and their capabilities
and skills in any subject, projects of research in science or the humanities,
or in specific written work of the students under the instruction or
supervision of the Faculty."
