Ionic wind

The Guardian has an article about a aircraft which uses ionic wind technology. A strong electric field accelerates charged nitrogen ions which are then expelled from the back of the aircraft. An advantage is that the flight is virtually silent. The movie does not produce a lot of confidence that this really produces enough thrust. The plane is first accelerated and then flies to the ground. One has flown paper airplanes for 69 meters Youtube. But anyway, the article is here. What appears to be missing are data which tell how much thrust the airplane produces. The input energy or kinetic energy of the plane are not that interesting. Still, that is an exciting new approach to flight which uses electric fields.
