Meet the Presenters
Presenters at the Math Warm-Up Series are Preceptors in the Department of Mathematics. They hold Ph.D.'s and are appointed in the department specifically for undergraduate teaching.
Derek Bruff
Derek Bruff received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Vanderbilt University. His research
interests are in harmonic analysis and wavelets. He supervises the
Math Question Center,
works with the Online Placement Exam project, and coordinates a seminar on
teaching for the mathematics department.
Dr. Bruff finds Boston very different from his native South Carolina, so he listens to country music and drinks sweet tea whenever he can to remind himself of home.
Dr. Bruff will be teaching Math 1a in Fall 2004.
Dr. Engelward will be the course head of Math 21a in Fall 2004.Robin Gottlieb
Dr. Gottlieb will be the course head of Math 1b in Fall 2004.
Thomas Judson
Dr. Judson received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of
Oregon. He works in Lie algebras and mathematics education. Dr.
Judson is especially interested in comparing mathematics education in
Japan with the situation in the U.S. He has traveled extensively in
Japan and has even published one paper in Japanese. When he is not
working in his office, Dr. Judson is often out riding his bicycle or
skiing. In fact, Dr. Judson worked as a fulltime professional ski
instructor for five years.
Dr. Judson will be the course head of Math Xa in Fall 2004.
Oliver Knill
The Swiss born Oliver Knill got his Math education
at ETH, which stands for "Eidgenoessische
Technische Hochschule" a term that can be translated as
"the MIT of Switzerland". Closer to the
mountains, Knill could be seen mountain-climbing, skiing, biking
or hang-gliding. But it is a shame - as he must admit -
that he can not yodel.
Even after 11 years of teaching and doing research at various US institutions like Caltech, the University of Arizona and the University of Texas and now at Harvard, he still preserved a lovely Swiss accent. Knill is interested in any aspects of math but especially in the "dynamics stuff".
Knill loves a lot to run along the Charles river or get lost in the suburbs and freeways near Boston with his roller-blades. Quote of Knill: "inline skating feels a lot like skiing."
Dr. Knill will be the course head of Math 21b in Fall 2004.
Matthew Leingang
Matthew Leingang received his Ph.D. from Harvard in the year 2000. His research interests are
in geometry and Lie groups, but he is also very interested in web pedagogies and the Semantic Web.
He heads the Online Placement Exam project,
developed this web site, and writes computer book reviews for Slashdot.
Dr. Leingang is a transplant to Boston from the midwest and hence cannot ski. He likes to cook, is learning to golf, and is looking forward to another Red Sox world championship.
Dr. Leingang will be the course head of Math 1a in Fall 2004.
Angela Vierling-Claasen
Angela Vierling-Claassen got her introduction to mathematics from Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time and Martin Garder's
Aha! Insight. She completed her Ph.D. in algebraic geometry many years later at Boston University.
She got married in a bowling alley this May and she can cookSeptember 20, 2004!-- #EndDate -->Fall 2004.
