Herrad of Landsberg: Hortus Deliciarum
| Like Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) also Herrad of Landsberg 1113-1195 was an abbess. Herrad lived at the Hohenburg Abbey in the Vosges mountains and famous for her pictorial encyclopedia Hortus deliciarum (the garden of delights). Herrad was born at the castle of Landsberg and entered later the Hohenburg Abbey near Strasbourg. Unfortunately, the original work of the Hortus deliciarum must have perished in the burning of the library of Strassbourg in 1870 (Franco-Prussian War) and was reproduced by Christian Engelhardt in 1818. The original manuscript had consisted of 648 pages on 324 parchment sheets. Source. |
