Povray is a great ray tracing system. It is fully Turing complete and can be programmed neatly. By the way, there is a short introduction to Povray written in 2001 for the course Math 21a. The document is almost 18 years old but still, almost everything remains as it was then. What other 3D programming tool or even programming language can tell that. What the Povray developers understood is that one does not screw with a programming language. There is a lot of legacy code around and even the slightest change breaks this.
