Marco Paolo

The swiss TV broadcasted on the 23th of December 1981 the movie Marco Paolo, two brothers. The film was directed by Tobias Wyss. I appeared also shortly there, in one scene on the rhein river the other at the piano. The image resolution of the movie is unfortunately rather low.
The location of the Weidling in the clip is about here. We often went on the rhein during afternoons. We mostly refused to use the motor for our trips (For me it was a matter of pride only to use rudder (a flat long rudder, which you twist around to move forward or navigate) or stachel (a fork type stick you push the ship forward with). We would go up to Stein am Rhein like that, all by pushing up and it was a matter of pride to never, ever to use motor help, even in difficult places like the Rheinbridge Hemishofen, where Stacheln (pushing up with the stick) was very difficult. I never went so high up alone. You need two in order to rest as you push the boat against the current up with arm muscles only. It was important to keep course exactly. A slight angle and the current would turn the boat down and you would loose a few hundred meters of gain.

Here is a photo made by the film crew while filming. On the picture to see to the very left is Peter Meili (1939-1990) who died in 1990 while climbing the Matterhorn. Heidi Meili is in the middle, then Marcus Knill. In the foreground probably Edi Schmid.
