As might be guessed from the title of these notes, they were written for an earlier draft of the book, whose eighth chapter contained material now in Chapter 9; at some point the this section of the chapter was deleted. Thus some references to the textbook must be changed: about halfway down the first page there is a reference ``See page 443 of the text'', which is now page 397; at the top of page 5, the figure that used to be on page 468 is now on page 403.

Other corrections:

• Page 3: the cpation of the top figure should end ``The equilibria are (2,2), (0,4), (3,0), and (0,0).''
• Page 3: the second line of text should end ``nor'' rather than ``not''.
• Page 7, near the middle: ``If both eigenvalues of J have a negative real part...'' presumes that we are in dimension 2. In general one should say ``If all eigenvalues of J have a negative real part...''
• Page 8, third bullet point under ``Phase Plane'': letter l is missing from ``sample''
